Patience Is Must for Learning Acrylic Painting

Remember when you started learning the alphabet as a kid? You didn't learn it in a week. It must have taken you months to master them perfectly. But once you know a to z, learning the words is pretty simple. Children have one advantage, they don't have any baggage, and their hard drives(brain) have a lot of space. When we grow and become adults, our hard drives are almost full and require regular formatting, especially when we want to learn something new.

When I switched careers and started my journey as a full-time acrylic artist, developing patience was the most challenging thing for me. I'm super dedicated but could be a better listener. I wanted to learn and implement different painting techniques as soon as possible, forgetting that we can only get the desired effect with practice. Hence most of my initial paintings lacked finishing. At times my paintings were great till I messed them up at the last moment in a hurry to finish them quickly. If someone pointed out that it could have been better, my first reaction was to ignore them.

I gradually realized my mistake and developed the patience to give as much time to a particular artwork as possible. I started seeing the results, and seeing my creation with minimal flaws was rewarding. The results further motivated me, and I moved to paint on large canvases that took weeks to complete.

The problem with all of us is that we are used to looking at the result rather than the hard work that goes behind that. If someone becomes an overnight sensation or goes viral. We think that their success is because of luck. However, no one learns anything in a day. Similarly, if we decide to learn any art, be it music, painting or any other craft, we must first accept the process that we need to follow. You can only paint well if you learn the basics, like how to hold the brush correctly, use different strokes, choose colors, and so on.

Often we become impatient because we want to skip the process and somehow reach the expert level. However, for effective learning, we need to develop patience. It will help us in all the phases, especially if things don't go as expected. If you are calm, you can step back and think of ways to deal with the situations more effectively.

In the above Photo, you can easily see the improvement in my artwork from 2019 to 2023.
